Is the low back considered a safe area for indirect moxa in cases of

Hypertension, if there are no heat or yin def S/Sx? Should moxa be applied

to ST36 afterwards to lower BP? Does it make a difference if the HTN is

" controlled " by western pharmaceuticals?

What is considered rule of thumb governing the safe useage of indirect moxa

when a patient has hypertension? My sources differ from no

contraindications, to an absolute rule of NO moxa on the face, arms, and

torso.

I'd appreciate any feedback. I'd also like to reintroduce myself now that

I've completed school, and am a newly licensed acupuncturist in San

Francisco.

Thank you,

Wendy,

I've never seen moxa raise BP and I've actually had patients (hypertensive

and otherwise) take their BP before and after and the next day in order to

verify the purported change. As such, my party line is that you can use

moxa as you see fit. The pole moxa is pretty mild anyway, and the Japanese

system of moxa holds that thread moxa doesn't necessarily add too much heat

to the body either. So perhaps the only stricture would be to avoid large

cones or scarring moxa.

I don't know about moxa aggravating HBP but I have experienced a bit of stick

moxa agravating a live fire or yang rising and causing a migraine. I presume

that sometimes when the yang or fire is active the BP may go up.
