Guest guest
If you are practicing Chinese Herbalism in the US and need certification, you need Bensky along with a variety of other sources. There are other materia medicas, although Bensky is used for the national exams. Hsu's Oriental Materia Medica has a bit more constituent description, but I find I don't use it as much and it sells for around $60. _The Illustrated Materia Medica_ is excellent for identification because it has photographs of the herbs in different preparations, is in alphabetical order by plant part and Latin name and has a linguistically integrated index which I wish the authors of other materias medica would adopt, but is not cheap either at around $79. Flaws' " 260 Essential Chinese Medicinals " is not as comprehensive and is written in Weisman-ese, but sells for only $32.95. I don't think it substitutes adequately. If you are not an herbal practicioner but want good descriptions of the most common TCM herbs and formulas in readable English, and don't mind the Japanese Kampo spin, Rister's. " Japanese Herbal Medicine " is a bargain at $19,95 list. ( It's also very good if you are a practicioner and have the other books because it lets you link to your English language mental database and has very up to date research information.)
