Greetings,

I am treating a 45 y.o. woman who has breast cancer - tumor removed via lumpectomy- lymph node involvement 5/17 nodes - who chose to undergo chemo and radaition therapy. As a aside effect of chemo, she has been thrust into menopause - and has side effects of night sweats (4-6/night lasting 30-60 seconds, very profuse sweating) and hot flashes during the afternoon/evening. She also has low libido, has periods of irritability and low energy.

As breast cancer appears to be estrogen sensitive, I have read conflicting reports on using liu wei di haung wan (and modifications of such) to treat her side effects. Can anyone comment on this area, esp citing pertinent research articles on mechanism of action of liu wei di huang wan? If this is not a good formula base to use, can anyone suggest pther one(s) that would be good to use to address her side effects, and to boost her immune system,

while not contributing to her potential of cancer? Any and all suggestions are appreciated. Thanks in advance.

for better health,

Susan:

If you have the QualiHerb catalog look up Tuo Li Xiao Du Yin for the

entire list of ingredients; it is also mentioned in Wiseman's

dictionary. We have used the Korean version this formula as a base

for many immune system conditions and for treating the side effects

of patients with cancer. It can be used together with most other

formulas.

A highly abbreviated version of the formula (about half the herbs) is

in Bensky (p. 255) as Tou Nong San. In Chinese herbal literature,

many breast cancer formulas are modified from it, too. If you would

like, send me your mailing address and I'll send you a sample of my

version.

HUA MING (BALANCING LIFE FORCE)

immune boosting, lymphatic support, supporting Wei Qi (defense energy)

BACKGROUND

The immune system is a complex that defends the body against all

types of foreign objects. The main organs involving the immune

responses are the bone marrow, the thymus, spleen, lymph nodes,

lymphatic vessels and the lymphoid tissues. The main components of

the immune response are immunoglobulins, lymphocytes, phagocytes,

complement properdin, the migratory inhibitory factor, and interferon.

The important idea of immune system is to alienate any foreign

objects from our own components. The immune system may develop or

deteriorate. The immune response can be genetically inherited or

acquired after later exposures.

In the Taoist's view, the representing immune organs are the lung and

skin. The lung is constantly and directly exposed to the alien

objects and atmosphere, and the skin is likewise so. The skin's role

is to separate our body unit from the rest.

The epithelial tissues contain numerous components protecting the

body from heat, cold, germs and water entering into our body space.

The skin pore would open and close to modulate the temperature inside

and outside of the body according to the inside temperature detected

by the lung. When the internal temperature and the external

temperature are too far apart, the skin would contract and lung's

quick contraction causes a sneeze. By sneezing, too high or too low

body temperature is emitted out so the difference is reduced and the

skin relaxes and the pore opens to release water, oil and toxin to

clean the body and protect the body by neutralizing and keeping the

foreign objects at the surface level.

The lung does the same in the more energetical level; it contacts the

outside and repel all but necessary objects like oxygen. The lung

would generate white(metal elemental color when the lung is in good

health) liquid to protect itself against fire-like atmospheric

energy.

In the Taoist's view, the space is filled with Shao Yang Fire Element

that condenses into Tai Yang, which shows extreme cold temperature.

Even if the air was cold, its effect on the human body after entrance

would be fire elemental, or inflammatory. Naturally, the water

elemental liquid or mucus would have to protect the metal elemental

lung to protect against the fire. The lung and the related

respiratory system produces the most mucus as a protective device.

Once the foreign objects enter the body either by penetration of the

lung or skin, or through the stomach (a hollow organ) as a food, the

spleen(a solid organ) has to process what entered the internal organ.

The solid organs are the life maintenance organs and the hollow

organs are containers of the related materials. For example, gall

bladder contains the bile made by the liver, and so they are related.

The urinary bladder and the kidneys have the same relationship.

The stomach has the same relation to the spleen. The quality of the

contained material depends on the function of the solid organs.

The spleen takes charge of what to repel and what to absorb from the

stomach.

The repelling activity of the spleen from the food substance(yin) and

the lung's repelling action against toxic energy(yang) meets and

forms the repelling activity connection between internal organs and

the skin surface. This way the entire immune system is based and

functions. According to the Taoist theory, there are 100 Pi Shen

(splenic vessels, lymphatic system); 64 spleenic branches from the

spleen-liver liver reaction (8x8 as in Iching hexagram for liver-

spleen action; liver number 8 and 8 with spleen earth), and 36

splenic branches created in the spleen-lung reaction (4x9 as in

Iching calculation for spleen-lung action; lung metal number 4 and 9

with spleen earth). Pishen is also called Yingqishen meaning the

nourishing qi circuitry. The two types of Pishen pass through the

spleen to obtain Yingqi(nourishing qi). In the course of 64 branches,

the Suizang acquires the red blood cells (erythrocytes), and in the

course of 36 branches, the white blood cells (leukocytes). The ratio

of RBC and WBC(and some white serum) in Taoist theory, therefore, is

64: 36 in the blood.

Immune system is not something that we can measure with quantity, but

with quality. Immune response is not to be shown in the healthy body.

Immune readiness is the quality of the healthy immune system.

Differently from many other physiological measurement, the level of

immune body alone does not indicate the strength of the system. Too

high or too low immune response would both mean its weakness.

The more precise measurement of immune system strength is in the

quality of the bone marrow, spleen and the lung. The bone marrow is

the storage of vital energy and the spleen is the transformer between

energy and material. The lung takes in the energy. When we inhale, we

have more energy than when we exhale. It is not because more oxygen

comes into the blood, but because the increase of pressure to the

internal organs, the heart and adrenal gland also increase the

tension and speed of energy.

The spleen is the central organ for the immune system while the lung

is more a detention organ of pathogenic entrance. The spleen monitors

mucus secretion in the entire body. The spleen transforms the

absorbed nutrients into white colored defense fluid. The spleen

transforms the lung's defense mechanism into lymphatic system. The

spleen transforms the bone marrow's stored Jing into immune response

energy.

All body cells and tissues can generate mucus, and its most important

energetical connection is the spleen. As a central Earth Element

being in charge of collection and distribution of proper nutrients

for the body and organs, its selective mechanism highly developed

into the complex immune system. Its outer layer is the lung, its

inner storage is the bone marrow.

As much as the defense mechanism depends on the spleen, and the

spleen is also in charge of nutritional absorption, a patient's

ability to absorb many nutrients is vital for spleen to convert them

into immune response.

The bone marrow is in the middle of the bone, and it is elementally

the Earth of Water, or in other words, the spleen of the kidney. The

stored ability to produce Jing in the kidneys is restored and hidden

away in the middle of the core of the body structure(the bone), which

is the same position as the brain showing the vitality of the bone

marrow. Interesting enough, in the commune course of the metastatic

cancer, the last organ before the central nervous system is attacked

is the bone marrow.

The most exposed organ to the diseases including cancer is the lung.

When the lung can share its burden to other not-so-vital organs in

the body, it can choose its champion organ taking over the burden.

The large intestine, prostate, uterus and the breasts are the

immediate choices to move the fatal burden in the lung.

When the cancer moves back into the lung, it follows the splenic

circulatory system(Pi Shen or lymphatic system). After lymphatic

system shows the cancer, the lung would show cancerous activity.

After the outer detective and defensive organ, the lung is affected

deeply, the cancer can move and attack any weak organs freely

including the bones, but not being able to access the bone marrow and

brain immediately.

Once again, the immune quality is in the readiness, not the amount of

immune response. Too much immune response can often cause

inflammation and excessive mucus secretion. While the secondary

inflammation is part of immune mechanisms, it can be often deadly on

its own. Too little immune responses can allow the pathogen to

penetrate into deeper layers of the body's energetical structure.

Having a potent immune system means the precise response to the

foreign objects entered. On the surface, the person does not show any

change, because everything is in balance. No organic hyperactivities

and/or hypoactivities would show with precision immune response.

While the capacity of the organs like the spleen, lung and bone

marrow are the keys of the potent immune system, the communication

between the three energetical layers of these three organs is also

important for precise immune response.

There are three stages of body conditions; the strong stage, the weak

stage and the sick stage. When we are out of sickness, we are not

healthy and strong yet. We are in the same weak stage just before we

got sick. Building the organic capacity to the highest possible level

with good nervous and blood communication in the all three organs

means the strong body against diseases.

Another important aspect of the immune system is adrenal response to

the pancreatic/splenic activity. Proper adrenal response supports and

speeds up the detoxifying mechanism of the liver and kidneys helping

them neutralize pathogenic factors. Since the adrenal function

energetically positions between the thyroid and pancreas in the order

of the endocrinal control system, the pineal gland, hypothalamus,

thyroid and pancreas all participate in immune mechanism indirectly.

The thymus is an organ that physically positions between the thyroid

and spleen/pancreas performing adrenal like energy with spleen like

material. While thymus produces the lymph and acts as a central gland

of entire lymphatic system, the endocrinal balance directly controls

the production of lymph by thyroid and adrenal balance.

Wei Qi is the defense energy, the adrenal hormone is the defense

hormone, spleen is the defense organ and the lymphatic system is the

defense circuitry.

The kidney' Jing represents the state of physical health, and the

adrenal agility indicates the precision of the defense mechanism. At

the same time the adrenal agility with precise balance with the

thyroid and pancreas/spleen determines the quality of the lymphatic

system, the most complete defense mechanism centered in the thymus.

Jim Iwould like to try this formula with a patient of mine. She is 50

yo and very fatigued and fearful since brain surgery to remove 2

tumors, radiotherapy and now chemo with Temedon. Let me know what you

can do.

Thanks Aris
