Guest guest
Tonic abuse I was taught that when you see those old Chinese women who are actually half bald, ie the hair is missing from the front half..........is due to them taking too many tonics . I also remember when I used to work from a Chinese medicine shop in Sydney........the guys there would regularly tonic themselves up on eg 30 grams of double steamed American ginseng.....they were aged in their 40's.........the next day they always presented with headaches for which they took panadol. They never believed me the headache came from the yang shen. Heiko

I think perhaps the bad effects of tonics may be related to high dosage (jeez, 40 g of ginseng is ten times the medicinal dose). also, taking tonics when there is lots of excess just tonifies the excess. I wonder if it makes a diff if you have cleared the excess first or concurrently, would there be side effects.

" I think certainly it makes a difference .If we look at some Li Shi Zhen's long life type tonic pills for example , I am sure those taoists taking them had no excess damp and heat or phelgm or stuck blood but had restored their health to optimum before supplementing their jing etc. An interesting combination from LSZ was just 2 herbs.....fu ling and xiang fu.
