Guest guest
Group: I treated my 1st kidney transplant patient (with acupuncture) yesterday and ran into a couple of unique things. I should be able to manage his concerns with acupuncture, so my questions are more academic in nature. First, he had his first transplant in 1975 (and second in 1980), so he has been immunosuppressed for 25+ yrs (currently down to prednisone as sole source of suppression). When working with such patients, what concerns do you have with using herbs and not interfering with the immunosuppression? Second, what implications do alterations in anatomy have? He has what he called a " canula " in his left radial artery. (Apparently they surgically looped his radial artery for better access with dialysis?) As I took his pulse the anatomy was clearly different, the artery (whole area) protruded more and and did not follow the normal course. It also vibrated with each pulsation. Obviously very turbulent (be design, he thought). To the group: What have you done when you have come across patients who are significantly altered by nature or the miracles of modern medicine (i.e. anatomically and physiologically)? They did not teach me how to deal with this stuff in school! Michael Buyze
