Guest guest
I would like to be allowed to join this discussion group as a student member. I am a student of Michael Tierra's East West Herb School, and am preparing for professional membership in the American Herbalist Guild. The curriculum of the East West School centers around Traditional , and seeks to combine TCM, Ayurvedic, and Western herbal traditionals into a system described as "Planetary Herbology." As students, we learn to use TCM diagnostic techniques and principles to design an effective herbal protocol based around the patient's own constitution, lifestyle, and disease symptoms. Participation in this discussion group would afford me the opportunity to refine my understanding of TCM principles and diagnostic techniques. Guest guest
Hi Valerie, My wife went through the course you are currently taking with the Tierras, and really enjoyed it. I think at the time Christopher Hobbs was one of the instructors. Are you folks also required to learn TCM tongue and pulse diagnosis? I'm also curious about which energetic paradigm you are using for the herbs. For example, do you use a Chinese herb to nourish a certain dosha, do you allocate qi and taste to western and Ayurvedic herbs, etc. Kip Roseman > [Original Message] > Valerie Saurer <vsaurer > > 6/26/01 9:54:02 PM > Subscription to discussion group > > I would like to be allowed to join this discussion group as a student member. Guest guest
Hi Joseph: Yes, we are required to learn tongue and pulse diagnosis. Although the course is by correspondence, we are required to attend yearly seminars where we can get hands-on training in these diagnostic techniques. We are also encouraged to work locally with a mentor who can help us refine our techniques. As to which energetic paradigm we use, we learn Ayurvedic, TCM, and Western herbology, and are encourage to interweave the three. For example, Planetary Herbal Formulas can contain herbs from all three paradigms simultaneously. I think the point is to use whatever works. There are instances in which Ayurveda has more to say about an issue (such as dietary and lifestyle recommendations), and instances in which TCM is more useful (as when there is a clearly defined imbalance that can be addressed by patent formulas). The Western herbs are described and used energetically to fit these two paradigms. This is quite helpful in that Western herbs are cheap and plentiful, whereas Chinese herbs can often be difficult for most people to locate and use. Although Ayurvedic energetics are taught, the course places the most emphasis on TCM. The Tastes vary slightly between the two systems, I think, and it is more helpful (at least to me) to pick one system and go with it. However, the Ayurvedic theory of doshas helps me quite often to make appropriate dietary and herbal choices. I have trained for the past two years in Western herbology. The addition of energetics to my herbal repertoire is quite exciting to me, because it gives me the opportunity to prescribe herbs more specifically suited to a particular person. I am still very much a beginner in TCM, but I don't believe I would have been able to become a first-rate herbalist without it. I am grateful to have found the Tierra's course. It has allowed me to train without having to relocate.
