In researching the original complaint that my patient came in for- excema with wheezing caused primarily by exposure to odors, I was struck by the paucity of material in either Chinese or western sources which deal with odor-triggered dermatitis. In the books I consulted, allergic response tended to be divided into allergic rhinitis or dermatitis. Lung involvement in dermatitis was noticably absent, as were rashes in rhinitis. Dermatitis/Eczema tended to be attributed to food ingested or irritants directly contacted and generally involved the spleen, stomach or liver. Anaphalaxys was the only condition directly involving breathing in allergens, and that appeared to be a type of inflammatory dermatitis on the interior of the URI. I am looking at the allergens as a kind of wind heat excess attacking a person with yin vacuity heat. I see liver yin and kidney vacuity as strong factors in this patient, with some lung qi vacuity, spleen qi vacuity and blood stasis issues as well. Any ideas or references that consider lung vacuity leading to eczema would be appreciated.
