A patient of mine has made a request for information in an area of CM

that is outside my area of expertise. I plan to give it the same

respect I would give any quasi-religious belief. This patient is into

feng shui and wants to know what I can add to her efforts. This is not

a joke and any help would be appreciated. Is anyone familiar with

resources, websites or rituals that involve the use of chinese herbs to

drive evil spirits from a house?

I am sure it was in a BPP book somewhere , there was discussion that

certain people are more sensative to feng shui and certain herbs/formula

were prescribed to help this.

A feng shui consultant told me that with people's astrological make up

, certain people have a disposition to " need " feng shui, and others

don't.

I thought it might equate to the strength of their wai qi ( ie not wei

qi) .

If anyone has the copy of Chinese Medicinal herbs by LSZ translated by

Smith and Stuart, George town press, page 395, it mentions " Bodhi seeds "

, and a few herbs in classical characters and wade giles

pronouciation.......if its of any use.

True fengshui has nothing to do with religion, ritual,

chanting, talismans, or icons, although these have

been brought into it by practitioners that did not

have adequate FS education, or by people with personal

beliefs that like to mix their beliefs with their

profession.

FS, like CM is not dependant on the belief of the

client. (I know there are no studies to back this up,

but who would fund such a study?) FS, like Chinese

medicine, is working with the qi, with yin and yang,

with the five elements.

If there are truly bad spirits, my FS master says this

is not to be messed with lightly. But in all

likelihood, there is some bad qi and not spirits. This

is the case in most houses with problems.

If there are spirits, they are from the yin world. We

as humans live in the yang world. The best thing a

layman can do is increase the yang in the house...make

sure the lighting is adequate, it is warm and dry

enough. Remove dead and dying vegetation, trash,

broken things. Even renovation to add more windows and

skylights could help. Spirits do not like light and

warmth.

Yes, there is more than that that can be done, but the

house needs a diagnosis as to what exactly is the

problem. One would take a compass reading and use the

date of construction of the building to do a

calculation. Based on this, the location of the doors,

the environment, and other factors, many

recommendations could be made.

But without 'seeing the patient' or looking at the

house, it is not possible to make more specific

recommendations. There is no one-size-fits-all remedy

in FS.

Needham wrote about a relatively early use

of Chinese herbs, I don't recall off hand

if it's in Science and Civilization or in

the little book of lectures he gave in HK

in 81. Smoke from burning herbs was used

to fumigate libraries when worms were the

scholars' worst enemies. Burning herbs were

also used as a method pest control in

farming.

There is a common tradition that is

widespread in China to this day. On the 5th

day of the 5th lunar month, which is

the anniversary celebrated to commemorate

the death of the poet Qu Yuan, people

hang a knot of herbs, usually different

varieties of artemisia, on their door

and windows.

Whether it's thought of as driving away

evil spirits, worms and vermin, or noxious

odors, the actions remain more or less the

same. There is also a body of literature

in China on the use of herbs in bathing

and other external uses as a means of personal

hygiene. We've been chewing on it for a few

years now.

Other than Needhams' comments, I don't know

of much in the way of English language literature

on these topics.
