Guest guest
Some of you may be aware of my aversion to using products that involve inhumane treatment of animals. I generally avoid chinese lu rong for this reason. However, I recently became aware that this item is available from New Zealand. I believe that NZ has laws against animal cruelty and that the deer are properly sedated before harvesting their antler velvet. Does anyone know? Heiko? This product, in addition to its well known TCM functions, also induces growth hormone release -- Chinese Herbs VOICE: (858) 946-0070 FAX: (858) 946 0067
Guest guest
This from a US guy based in NZ , Hi Heiko, Good to hear from you. I've forwarded this off to Alison who is better at answering these questions than me. Actually, no sedation is used, some sort of accupressure is now being used. Since we deal mostly in extracts and processed velvet we are not in direct contact with the velveting (my brother in law does it, but haven't watched it in several years). It is true that some of the velvet from China and Russia is taken from deer who are killed for the velvet or are kept in deplorable conditions. In NZ the deer are some of the best kept animals on the farm. The velveting process is the one intervention in their yearly rountine. Best regards, Tom AND Tom sent this on to me from you - you may want to refer to page 74 of my book Velvet Antler which discusses the animal welfare code regarding velvet harvesting in NZ. This is an important issue for the Game Industry Board and you may find more info on the GIB website - velvet.org.nz I hope this is enough - I understand there's a strong move to using acupressure for velvet removal to avoid the anaesthesia drugs. Best regards, Alison And I have a spare copy of that book , so I will send you one. Heiko

No. In New Zealand, velvet can only be removed by veterinarians or specially trained and certificated farmers under a programme: developed in consultation with animal welfare groups approved by the New Zealand Government's Animal Welfare Advisory Committee involving ongoing training, supervision and auditing Methods (including local anaesthetic) are used to provide analgesia so deer don't feel any pain during velvet removal. > > > And I have a spare copy of that book , so I will send you one. > > Heiko thanks. much appreciated. Guest guest
funny thing about lu rong, I have never prescribed it , not for cost or ethical reasons, but just because I seem to get things done using other herbs. When I was working in the herb shop in Sydney, I found that no herbalists ever prescribed it either, but the shop did a roaring trade selling it to peop-le just coming in off the street.
