Habit forming purgatives?

Hiya,

I have a patient with some Qi stagnation type constipation. I added a

wee bit 'o Da Huang and Fan Xie Ye to a formula made up of predominately

Qi activators. The patient is pleased with the results, but asked about

the habit forming potential of the purgatives.

I didn't honestly have a good answer for him.

Has anybody seen patients grow reliant on purgative herbs?

Thanks.

shouldn't be a problem if you address the root. Question is where

the qi stag comes from. liver constraint, qi xu, etc.

Yes, with overuse they can cause the bowel to become atonic, just like

cascara. long term use of Da huang also causes tissue change's in the bowel

wall. even a relatively mild rx such as ma zi ren wan will have this effect.

best for short term use

Patients will eventually habituate to the stimulant purgatives, like

da huang, so ideally they should be gradually withdrawn as the

underlying problem is corrected.
