Guest guest
What were people taught about decoction dosage? Are the dosages in formula texts designed for one or two days use? My teachers used these high doses for one day in most cases that presented with acute illnesses or severe sx in chronic illnesses. this would result in doses of 9-15 g/day for herbs like huang qi and many yang and yin tonics, 6-9 for most others, with some really strong herbs like huang lian used at 3-6. Basically this is using the dose ranges listed in Bensky's materia medica as a one day dose. I see many people using these dose ranges for two days. I do not get adequate results when I use doses at this lower level. What I mean by adequate is that I do not see significant short term relief of pain, fatigue, insomnia, bleeding. Nor do I see remission of autoimmunity and benign tumors like fibroids. -- Chinese Herbs VOICE: (858) 946-0070 FAX: (858) 946 0067
Guest guest
Todd: You're asking a question with more than one variable. Dose could also be measured against the effectiveness of the formula for the person. I suspect that most practitioners have had the experience of using hebal (or acupuncture) formulas for the same condition from different companies or teachers that work significantly better or worse than others. Typically, I find that 1000-1500 mg TID of a formula (in concentrates) is sufficient to manage or improve the condition of most problems. For severe, acute problems, like flu, I've used 1000- 2000 mg every hour with good results. Jim Ramholz What were people taught about decoction dosage? Guest guest
My teacher WANTED to use the decoction dose (similar to as you stated below)for one day only, but often advised to use for two days, simply because she was concerned about the cost for the patient. I have seen it used both ways ... when I was in China, the doseages were similar to the text's dosages, and for one day only. At a weekend workshop, Bob Flaws had a few comments about doseage, and generally agrees with you that the result is slower if the doseage is lower. He uses high doseages, and gets results where other practitioners have not (and used the same herbs). Shelley , wrote: > What were people taught about decoction dosage? I just want to know what people were taught the dosages refer to in Bensky and internal med texts ranging from Sionneau to Giovanni. Are they 1 or 2 day packs? todd
