Guest guest
Mark: Perhaps I was unclear. The shaoyang character of the virus is not part of the SHL pattern, but the shaoyang of six excesses (liu yin) which are the cause of disease. This type of fire element is localized and intense. The 5-Phases process describes the development of AIDS as this type of fire attacking the blood level (in this case, the 5-Phases of Earth) at the initial stage even before symptoms develop and 8-Principles is possible. It's like a mathematical equation describing how the variables relate to each other. If you want to describe any individual patient, at any stage, simply plug in their balance or symptoms into 5-Phases and use the Guest/Host rules to see the controlling parameters of how the disorders change. Symptom patterns arise from this dynamics. By using a systems approach and relating 5-Phases of the Earth to the 5-Phases of the body as a whole (like a wheel within a wheel) we can " plug in " some of the Western observations along with our own. The advantage of using 5-Phases (this is NOT the Worsley system), is that it describles developments in the pulses even before symptoms arise. If you use only 8-Principles or Zang-fu descriptions you miss much of what is happening in the disorder. SHL describes symptoms as a function of the body's response. AIDS does not follow the SHL pattern of attacking Taiyang and then the other levels in sequence; it is a hidden pathogen. But even during it's latency period, it is attacking the blood according to the 5-Phase pattern.
