Guest guest
Heiko, There are two English language discussions on traditional Chinese treatment of smallpox. One is the chapter on 'pox planting' in Xu Da-chun's Yi xue yuan liu lun ( " Forgotten Traditions of Ancient Chinese Medicine " translated by Paul Unschuld, Paradigm Press), the other Volume VI:6 of " Science and Civilization in China (Biology and Biological Technology), Cambridge University Press, pg. 114 through 175, " the origins of immunology " . Both texts discuss methods of drawing fluid from smallpox pustules to immunize patients, with the criteria for doing so. Xu Da-chun's essay also critiques using toxic medicinals to treat smallpox. Interesting reading. Guest guest
I am new to the list so I am sorry if this is a repeat. I am interested in herbal treatments for Smallpox. This seems like an interesting area for discussion since there are no Western treatments beside supportive care and anti-biotics for secondary bacterial infections. In the CDC information (www.cdc.gov) there is a chart of fever which makes me suspect that it would be considered a Wind Heat disorder which within 2 days enters the Shao Yang level. I am also looking for any sources which might be useful. Perhaps someone familiar with the Shan Han Lun might know where to look.
