Guest guest
I am currently a student at the American College of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. I am only in my first year. A friend of mine had a question, and I was hoping someone here could help. He has been taking Korean ren shen that he decocted from the actual root, as opposed to a pill form. During sexual relations, he noticed that his ejaculatory fluids were tinted with red, which he felt like was blood. Whenever he would not take the ren shen this would not happen. Is this something for him to be concerned about? I know that ren shen is blood invigorating, but did not know if this was a serious problem or not. Any help you can give would be beneficial. Guest guest
Although in 'mainstream' western medicine blood in the ejaculation is usually considered benign, (but can be a sign of prostate CA etc..), from a TCM perspective it can occur from only 1 of 3 causes - in this case. 1) Heat 2) qi vacuity 3) stasis because of ren shen's nature- being warming (especially the korean), it is probably aggravating some kind of heat in his body. I would balance him with other herbals or advice him not to take that kind of ginseng... - > > Julie Gaines [julie] > Friday, November 23, 2001 6:12 AM > > Ren shen > > I am currently a student at the American College of Acupuncture and > Oriental Medicine. Guest guest
Hi Julie, Is the Korean ren shen what is called "red"? In any case, this does not sound natural. He should see a urologist to find out what goes on here. Also, if you were his practitioner, you would need to get more information diagnostically in order for most of us here to assist your friend. In my training, we were cautioned against the use of single herbs, especially for long term. Formulas, especially the appropriate one, are more friendly. How old is the man. what does his tongue look like. Young people or those with internal heat must not use red ginseng by itself in most circumstances or dampheat will arise.
