Guest guest
Fernando, > What does a > " Functional Translation " mean and is there room for personal > interpretation in this method? Functional translation is a term chosen by COMP (Council of Oriental Medical Publishers) to describe translations that do not maintain a one-to- one relationship with a known Chinese text. It might also be called a paraphrase. The COMP descriptions can be found at: http://www.paradigm-pubs.com/paradigm/refs/comp.pdf There is much greater latitude for personal interpretation in this approach. There are several language learning texts available including: Bob Flaw's `Teach Yourself to Read Modern Medical Chinese,' Paul Unschuld's `Learn to Read Chinese' Series and tape. There are more in the works, including a combined on-line and in-person Chinese medical language program but these are not yet near the announcement stage. For example, Paul Unschuld is working on a multi-media program for spoken Chinese. I think it is safe to say that within five years learning Chinese medical Chinese will be practically available to anyone who wishes. It is to early to know anything about price. Guest guest
Bob, Thanks for clarifying this. I guess it's like interpreting or re-arranging a word for word translation so that it makes sense. Right? Fernando -- In , " Robert L.
