Guest guest
Actually I go for being DrEAM doctors. Kind of a soap opera feeling. Seriously, I was talking to an Chinese-American colleague today about this and was surprised at her vehemence towards the word " oriental " . To her it recalled being called a Jap growing up in the USA and being called " oriental " meant she was lumped together without regard to her cultural specificity. I don't quite understand it but I do respect her feelings towards the term. What does DAOM stand for? Asian Oriental Medicine? How about EAMD (east asian medical doctorate) Dare I say this? Is it time to abandon the term oriental altogether? Perhaps Ken can comment on this. But it is my understanding that oriental is considered a pejorative term by both academics and eudcated people from east asia. All major universities have long since replaced this term with east asian. Then we could be DEAM's. Wouldn't you want to be on the DEAM Team? OK. I'll duck and run for cover now. I can sense the rotten tomatoes flying towards me.
