Guest guest
Hi Everyone, Happy New Year!! I have recently run across this mushroom - marasmius androsaceus - in an osteoarthritis formula. I haven't been able to find a Chinese/PinYin name for it and was wondering if anyone here can direct me to some more information. On one web site it is listed as a Chinese mushroom used for pain relief and strengthening the appetite. Thanks in advance, Nan
Guest guest
Marasmius androsaceus in 'Icones of Medical Fungi in China' is used for pains in the joints, remedy for injuries caused from falls, fractures, contusions and strains, sciatica, trigeminal neuralgia, and rheumatic pains in the joints. These are all modern biomedical indications. Unfortunately, it is not in the zhong yao da ci dian (Great Dictionary of Chinese Medicinals), which has 5000 or so entries and traditional indications and properties. You may want to check the Barefoot Doctor's Manual. . . .I can't find my copy. Guest guest
Marasmius androsaceus is called an1 luo2 xiao3 pi? san3 (not positive about the tones). The pharmacology that I have is pretty much along the lines of what Zev wrote. I would only add that in a large clinical study (428 subjects) it was noted that the neuralgia reducing effect had a slow onset but was long lasting. In several animal tox studies it showed no toxicity, including being safe to take if you are a pregnant rabbit, in case that is of any comfort. There were "very few" allergic responses to an luo in the human clinical study, with symptoms of slight dizziness and skin rash which reportedly cleared up after discontinuing.
