Guest guest
Expert finds Chinese people need less nicotine Scientists say people of Chinese origin smoke less and have lower rates of lung cancer because they don't need as much nicotine. Tests show they break down the chemical more slowly than other races, so it stays in their system longer. This seems to satisfy the need for nicotine and leads to fewer cigarettes being smoked. The cross-racial study was carried out at the University of California in San Francisco by Neil Benowitz. He also found Chinese people have lower amounts of a liver enzyme which breaks down nicotine and activates the cancer causing agents in tobacco smoke. Professor Benowitz says the lack of the enzyme CYP2A6 and the fact Chinese people need to smoke fewer cigarettes may explain their lower lung cancer rate. He believes the results have practical applications, adding: " Our findings suggest that Chinese-Americans and Chinese who are trying to stop smoking may need a different dose of nicotine medication than do Caucasians.
