Dear Alon,'s question was

" Is phlegm formation due to failure of spleen T & T always involve the

accumulation of dampness as an intermediary pathogen or can phlegm

form directly as a result of splenic failure without dampness being

involved? Also, is it correct to say that damp accumulation occurs

in the lungs. I know dampheat can lodge in the upper burner due to

external invasion, but does internal damp lodge in the lungs, per

se? this pattern is not listed in Wiseman, though I have seen

passing reference elsewhere, I believe. "

As I read it, Todd says he knows dampheat can lodge in the upper

burner, but wonders about damp in the lung in particular.

This area of study has always been a little confusing to me as well,

and that was why I tried to due a little research on it. For

example, when I read about the san jiao bian zheng as an adjunct to

Wen Bing Xue, ala Wu Tang, I do not see anything that resembles " hot

type " bronchitis. One could perhaps make a case that this Western

disease could or should have a bian zheng of " damp-heat in the upper

burner, " but according to my understanding, bronchitis with yellow or

green phlegm is usually designated " phlegm-heat in the lung, " or some

such. (Bensky calls it " internal clumping of phlegm-heat " ) These two

patterns have different signs and symptoms, and disease mechanisms,

for that matter.

As for " damp in the upper warmer, " while I suppose such a pattern

exists, I cannot recall seeing this designation. Wu Tang was

interested in warm disease, after all.
