Guest guest
I'd be curious to hear whether others of you have experienced significant discordance between tongue and other S/Sx in patients. I have had several patients over the years who have dramatically different tongues than one would expect. In a particular case, a man I've been treating for 4 years now, has a perfect tongue. No, really. Textbook: moisture, body, coat, everything. His western dx? AIDS. He came to me very sick and is now moderately healthy. Over the last 4 years I've treated him for several horrible cases of shingles (the worst I've ever seen --- and I've seen a lot), pneumonia, horrible d/heat type diarrheas, and plenty of drug side effects. His tongue never changes. His pulse often will shift slightly but nothing too dramatic. I use signs and symptoms as my sole gauge of pattern discrimination. Of course he is one of the rare exceptions, usually I trust the tongue above all other non-verbal info and find that it often reveals subtleties about the patient that greatly aid treatment. Still, it is interesting to me that there do seem to be folks out there whose tongues seem to operate independently from there zang fu.
