To distinguish between a cold or an allergy, check and compare the lung, spleen, liver, and SJ pulses. If sanjiao heat (right proximal fu) is going towards the lung (right distal zang), and there is also heat in the upper liver (left middle zang) reflecting the fever in the muscles, then it is a common cold. But if there is no sanjiao heat going toward the lung, and the lung congestion is due to heat and mucus (dampness) that comes from the superficial part of the spleen (right middle zang) to the long, then it is allergy. In this case the superficial part of the spleen pulse is going towards the deeper part of the lung. If their pulse isn't showing any allergic response and you let them take a small amount of the substance in question, you should see their reaction. Their allergic response in the pulse movement should be strongly acute if they were all right earlier but have taken the herb or substance in question within the past half hour or so. It may be something on the herbs such as binders etc. Alon
