acupuressure

Thu, Aug 1, 2002, 9:38 AM

Dear Marco,

First of all I would like to thank you for referring me to the website. I still have to reply to your most recent querry about my 'minor thesis'. apologies.

I like the English term 'acupressure' if what we mean by it is to apply' pressure' or 'power' (li or Qi) over an acupuncture point. However, I am fully aware how this term has been 'bastardized' in the West. As for the the Chinese term for acupressure, the Chinese English Traditional Medical Word-Ocean Dictionary (l994, pp.1182-1183) provides some of the Chinese names like zhi zhen (digital acupuncture which means the fingers taking the place of the metallic acupuncture needle); zhi ya liao fa (digital pressure therapy); zhi ya fa (digital pressure method ) .

Sincerely ,

I'll defer to the Chinese-literate on the proper term, but my tui na

instructor (Sha Lixin from Shanghai) used the term yi zhi chan ( " one

thumb meditation " was her translation) and she indicated that her

teacher was a specialist in the method and that it is considered a

very high form of the art. This term supposes a certain degree of

mental focus in addition to the application of pressure.
