Dear Group,

Has anyone heard of Ba Wang Hua, Hylocerus flower? I can't find it in my

books.

A student of mine brought some in, and it looks light and fluffy, like a

freesia, and tastes salty and sweet, like dulse. What are its properties and

actions?

Dear Julie,

Hi ! In volume II of the " National Compilation of Chinese Plant Yao "

is entered as " Liang Tian Chi " which can be translated as " The Ruler

Which Measures Heaven " . The entry gave the botanical name of this

plant as Hylocereus undatus (Haw.) Britt.et Rose.

The actions and properties of the flower of this plant are Sweet.

bland, and slightly cooling. The flower has the capacity to drain heat

Qing re; moisten the lungs " run Fei " ; stop coughing .

The stem or " jing " has the attributes of soothing the tendons " Shu

Dear Julie,

according to the Zhongyao Dacidian Ba Wang Hua is one of the synonyms for

Jian Hua (same 'hua', i.e. flower). The full botanical Latin name is given

as Hylocereus undatus (Haw.) Britt. et Rose, so we can translate it as

'Hylocerei Flos' (didn't find a vernacular word).

the Zhong Da, besides botanical, harvesting & chemical info further tells us

that the flower is

sweet indeed ;-), and 'slighty cold'.

actions according to one author:

" stops Qi pain; rectifies/manages/deals with phlegm fire cough; take it with

pork-meat soup. "

and another author:

" clears heat & moistens the lung; stops cough; treats pulmonary

tuberculosis, bronchitis, knotted lymph-nodes in the neck & parotitis''
