Hi Cynthia,

next three herbals all belong to the zi jin niu plant-family:

--------------------------

Ardisia bicolor Walker (zi bei zi jin niu)

has 'jin niu' as its last two characters

temp: cool (liang)

taste: bitter astringent (ku se)

removes stagnation promotes flow of blood (qu yu huo xue)

removes toxin opens orifices (jie du kai qiao)

this page has an appendix on the difference to Ardisia crenata Sims.

-----------------------------

Ardisia japonica Hornsted (zi jin niu)

has 'jin niu' as its last two characters

temp: neutral (ping)

taste:pungent (xin)

promotes blood flow stops bleeding (huo xue zhi xue)

cools blood drains humid (qing re li shi)

--------------------------

Ardisia crispa Thunb. (bai liang jin)

has 'jin' as its last character

temp: cold (han)

taste: bitter astringent (ku se)

qingre jiedu shujin huoxue

cools blood expels toxin softens sinews promotes bloodflow

this page has an appendix on the difference to Ardisia brevicaulis

Diels

Polygala japonica Houtt.

another name for this one is jin niu cao among several other names

----------------

Kyllinga brevifolia Rottb.

another name for this is jin niu cao -dito-

----------

I could find no reference at all in the

zhong hua ren min gong he guo cao dian (THE reference)

neither in another 1000p thick herbal book...

I found above information in a

'popular/folk herbals'-book (as opposed to the TCM-herbals books)

which really dissappointed me ten years ago because it listed *none*

of the commonly used TCM herbals but lesser known folk-herbals.

Greetings Tay.
