Hello Guy &

* Calcium citrate may have a longer half life in the

blood, it may get there faster, however the purpose of

supplementation in this case is to increase bone

density.

* Therefore the calcium hydroxyapatite supplement

would be preferred for cases of osteopenia because it

is shown to increase bone density, whether or not it

stays in the blood longer.

* it does not what the blood levels, absorption rates,

etc., were when you want the patient to have increased

bone mass.

===> 1st, calcium citrate has been proven to be safe

and effective for helping patient with osteoporosis.

It is also has been shown to increase bone density in

younger and older population.

===> 2nd, it is important to know whether oral

supplement have good absorption rate. That is why we

as doctors need to investigate a trustworthy company

before we recommend their products to our patients.

If we don't do this, how can we explain to patient the

difference between a $25 Calcium supplement we sell in

our clinic to that of a $6 Calcium supplement they get

from Costco (Kirkland is the company)?

===> 3rd, what's the difference between

hydroxyapatite, calcium from oyster shell, calcium

oxalate, calcium carbonate, and calcium citrate? We

need to know their difference! Calcium citrate not

only has good absorption rate (especially taken after

meal) but only increase plasma calcium concentration

(calcium in blood, that is) for a long time. This is

significance when you understand they physiology of

bone resorption. When plasma calcium concentration

decreases (hypocalcemia), PTH (parathyroid hormone) is

released to increase bone resorption activities...and

thus normalize the plasma calcium concentration.

However by doing so, bone lose calcium and patient

suffers osteoporosis. The longer half-life of calcium

citrate in blood decreases PTH level and thus prevent

or slow down the bone resorption rate.

*Jim Shattel at Metagenics Midwest would have the

explicit details on this particular study if you want

to contact him. His supplement company is one of

the best I have seen for nutritional products of the

Western variety.

===> 4th, I am very familiar with Metagenics. It is

one of the many companies that not only provide the

nutiritional products, but it also provides seminars

to teach " doctors " how to use their products.

However...I am trying very hard to be diplomatic

here...herbal/nutritional companies, in general, have

their own agendas when they offer these seminars --

the bottom line is to increase product sales. The

difference between herbal companies and pharmaceutical

companies is that herbal companies charge fees for

their seminars while pharmaceutical companies pay

doctor dinner and give drug samples to attend their

seminars. Therefore, I suggest that we, as

responsible doctors, should use our knowledge and

judgement rather than blindly believe all these

so-called " experts " at the seminar...such as the case

of deke kendall...oooop! did I just open another can

of worm? ;-p

===> Hydroxyapatite is a bigger molecule than calcium

citrate...and therefore does not absorb in the

intestine as well as smaller molecule.

humbly yours,

Thomas
