Guest guest
Dear Dia, That was indeed a very fascinating experience and I wish that we would have more of such 'interventions' from Australian Moms here downunder. Right now, we are supposed to be having this horrible 'meningococcal epidemic' where hundreds of people (especially children) are dying. So the federal government has earmarked almost A$60 million for meningococcal C vaccination. The peak medical research body here has even come out with guidelines on how to deal with the epidemic i.e. vaccination and antibiotics (pennicillin). A homeopath developed a homeopathic vaccine and was recently hounded in the media for peddling " unproven " remedies. We have had this sort of 'epidemics' in the past like flu, hepatitis, meningitis etc. And the standard response was the same. It seems that people here have lost 'touch' w ith nature i .e. their natural self and the natural world out there . The only 'nature' left' are the virus, bacteria and germs that needed to be exterminated for our natural life to continue. So I pondered about how to help people cope with this epidemic. Similar to what I have done in the past, I launched my own " public health measures " (using Todd's words) . I wrote a letter to one of the influential newspaper (to which I and now I am contemplating discontinuing my subscription) about using what I refer to as " lifestyle vaccination " in dealing with the meningococcal epidemic. Unfortunately, the paper did not publish my letter . Hence, I am running my letter through the CHA hoping it could benefit my overseas colleagues and their patients as well . Regards, Rey Tiquia ------ ----- Meningococcal infection & Life Style Vaccination Fri, Aug 23, 2002, 4:08 PM Dear Editor, The findings that " children who present with meningococcal C are 10 times more likely to come from a household where smoking occurs " ( The Age 21/8/02) is a magnificent conceptual breakthrough which should bring about a corresponding " technological breakthrough " in dealing with the disease. Instead of just seeing the germs as an isolated noxious biological entity that ensconced itself in the nasopharangeal region of our bodies and thus infects us, through this findings, we can now see that the meningicoccal germ i.e. Neisseria meningitidis , like us , has a life which interacts with the environment around it. The " cigarette smoke in the household " gives the germ more power to invade our bodies while it renders our throats and lungs powerless. Hence in addition to the use of antibiotics and vaccines to biologically exterminate the' life' of the germs, we can also make use of the 'technique' of what I call " life style vaccination " which can make our body powerful and the germ powerless by : 1) keeping away from cigarette smoking in the household expecially in the presence of children ; 2) doing some early morning breathing and physical exercises; 3) eating well; 4) sleeping well; 5) leading a balanced and less stressfull lives. 6) Staying away from crowded rooms and areas . 6) Gargling with warm water with sea salt upon waking up in the morning and before going to bed. I went from NO animals - and horrid allergies - to three cats, at least one dog, a guinea pig, mice and several horses. At first, of course, I was a disaster, but somewhere in her DNA my mother felt this was the way to deal with the situation and by gum she was right. As a result of her intervention, not only did I have a fantastic childhood with pretty much all the animal friends I could desire, my allergies went down considerably. And a few years back, when I hit 35 y.o., that magic number allergists like to point to, and my allergies looked like they were coming back, I went back to animal therapy. In addition to the 2 cats I had, I added another cat and have cycled through several dogs (raised Guide Dogs for a while). I now just have the one dog and a large lot with plenty of wild areas that haven't quite been cultivated, so the dog brings in all sorts of pollens etc. I'm happy to report that I'm doing great and the allergies (with a wee bit of support from Yu Ping Feng San Wan) are, in essence, gone. As for those antibacterial soaps - who thought THAT was a good idea? Before surgery, sure I want my surgeon washing within an inch of their lives. But kids? I don't know about you all, but I'm old enough to remember parents laughing when their children made " mud pies " and ate them. Now, a kid gets a speck of dust on their hands and out come all the anti-this and anti-that wipes. Makes my skin crawl and it has NEVER been something I've believed in. However, public health measures and nutrition have had ten times the impact of vaccines on measles in america). it would seem more prudent to treat those at risk and leave the rest of us alone. there has been some speculation that vaccines promote autoimmunity. I used to think this was a direct toxic effect, but now I wonder if it is really because natural immunity is thwarted and aberrations thus occur. Guest guest
Dear Dia and Rey... Interesting article, interesting experience and interesting letter... this brings to my mind that Chinese medicine has a kaleidoscope of knowledge that has been referred to as "folkloric", I think that one of the "advantages" of the little I know about Chinese medicine is that it has had a very "inclusive" relationship to what has been referred to as "folkloric" knowledge amongst other trends-doctrines: Shamanistic Budistic Cofunistic Daoistic Folkloric empericalistic (as in empresism) experiancialistic Forigene contact before Western contact (Asia...) Westernistic Idosyncranistic ("personal understanding") others...? and all related to the patients which gives the practical aspect to the above an edge... Not sure if one can "bend" the word endings, however apart from - A History of Ideas, Unschuld are there any other books that "digest/tackle" this aspect to Chinese medicine? Apart from "research" of defined western disease entities maybe illness and coping there of in any culture might "bring" out new and/or dormant aspects to Chinese medicine and or contemporise such needs as "illness coping". the term I first came across via Rey dis-ease I think is a excellent term usage that both denotes and connotes "illness and disease" (possibly in a more cultural flexible and/or adoptive syntax...). As an example my dear girlfriend (in Guatemala one says wife as not to "lose face"), mentions that: Limon (lime) is an enemy of Coffee... brings on dolores de estomago - stomach ache tried it and it did at least give me stomach pain... By the way not sure if it "works" but when people have fungus - hongos some people claim from a "alternative ticket" that taking the juice of lime increasing it one a day until you are drinking ten fresh lemons, reduce by one until you reach number one and then stop. not sure if this is done with food or not, at least would not advise to drink coffee an hour before or after... This is said to make the "blood" more alkaloid and fungus don't like that... Hmm, I can not voucher for the reasoning and or the actual treatment, however what I have seen helping against fungus is to apply the juice directly and exposing the aeria affected to direct sunlight... My apologies for a tendency to get side tracked... Marco
