What I saw at the Beijing hospital last spring was pretty much like what goes on

in America. Patients with big problems were willing to take raw herbs, a lot of

people with smaller problems only wanted pills and the doctors rolled their eyes

and said OK.

By the way, the hospital used the Korean herb baggie machines alot to precook

the formulas for a not so small price (50 cents a bag). It seemed like a third

of the out-patients got their herbs this way. All the in-house hospital formulas

at the China Japan Friendship hospital were prepared this way.

It is the fact that they rolled their eyes that says more to me than

that they prescribed pills. Like most chinese docs, they

apparently don't think the pills do much, but they know there is a

decent chance the patient will respond anyway. We must never

forget that most diseases are self-limited. While most people

eventually die of a chronic illness, most of the complaints people

go to the doctor for over the course of their life would have gone

away by themselves (such as nightsweats and hot flahes in

most cases -- less than 20% of women have prolonged

debilitating perimenopause sx).
