The Elite Few v the Mediocre Masses

Hi All,

The question of the Elite Few v the Mediocre Masses has arisen on

several Lists (Acup, Herbs, and other aspects of Holistic Med). IMO

is is arrogant for one to hold that one possesses all [medical] truth. It

is equally arrogant for one GROUP to have that view, whether that

group be expert surgeons, or expert nutritionists, or expert TCM

practitioners.

The older I get, the more I realise how inadequate is my real

knowledge. I have been studying and using holistic concepts [esp

acup] for >28 years and each time I read a new book or attend a

seminar I learn new ways of looking at the age-old problems of

illhealth and its therapy.

For me, there is only ONE medicine - " the medicine that works "

with reasonable predictability in most cases. Ideally, each of us

should be able to help, if not " cure " , 100% of our patients, but that

ideal is unattainable until we become like God - all knowing and all

loving.

Some years ago, I realised that my knowledge of TCM Patterns and

Dx was superficial. I enrolled in a Herbal Med Course, given by Jim

Skoien, Miel van den Bosch & his wife Mieke Maelfait. We

completed the course last weekend and I am more convinced than

ever that it would take me many reincarnations to get a real grasp of

the subtlelties of herbal med, not to mention other components of

medicine - nutrition, homeopathy, psychotherapy, etc, etc.

However, each of us must live and work NOW. We can not wait for

Enlightenment before we begin to TRY to help our suffering animal

and human patients. We need to know our strengths and limitations,

and to refer cases to colleagues if they are beyond our capabilities.

May I suggest that we try to tolerate widely diverging views on how

to best help our patients, even if those views clash with our own

strongly held opinions.

Peace to all of you.

Best regards,

this is not merely the clash of opinions. In my opinion :-), this

has nothing to do with opinions at all. it is about what approach

is supported by the chinese historical tradition. One of the

problems we have had in TCM for a long time is the tendency to

fill in gaps in knowledge with speculation. I am all for using

what works. My pragmatism is well known. the question is what

works and how do we know? research has obliviated many

opinions over time and with good cause.

Well, from A Great Wagon, Rumi said: " ...there are hundreds of ways to
