Guest guest
Hello all, My name is Jimmy Symmonds. I am a veterinarian and run a referral centre for complementary vet medicine in Oxford, UK. I treat animals with acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine and therapeutic nutrition. I have studied veterinary acupuncture through the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society (IVAS) and have just completed a Chinese Herbal Medicine course for veterinarians hosted by the Belgium Veterinary Acupuncture Society (BeVAS). I have been completely overwhelmed by the potential and scope of the various Chinese medical models and philosophies to act as a vehicle for the healing of my patients (and for my own personal development). I have dived head-long into some aspects of Chinese thought - including nutrition, QiGong/ Taiji, philosophy/religion. I am very interested in exploring the theories for use in animal medicine. I am fascinated by the relationships we have with animals and the rest of nature, and by the way we reveal our Selves through these relationships. If any of you on this group has similar interests or has any input in this regard I would love to hear from you. Amnion cells produced detectable amounts of both IL-6 andTNF-alpha under LPS-stimulated conditions. Astragalus extract inhibitedthe production of IL-6. However, TNF-alpha production was not inhibitedby the extract on L929 cytotoxicity assay. Treatment of amnion cellswith LPS for up to 24 h resulted in an increase in PGE2 release in aconcentration- and time-dependent manner. The extract (150 mg/ml)significantly inhibited the output of PGE2 by amnion cells (p<0.01). Thearachidonate lipoxygenase metabolite (LTC4) was increased by LPStreatment of amnion cells. Astragalus extract (30 mg/ml) inhibited LTC4production by approximately 65% throughout the culture period. Theseresults suggest that Astragali radix extract may have a role ininhibiting bacterial infection-associated preterm labor by suppressingthe productions of IL-6, PGE2, and LTC4 by human amnion cells.PMID: 11824562 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE]Chinese Herbal Medicine, a voluntary organization of licensed healthcare practitioners, matriculated students and postgraduate academics specializing in Chinese Herbal Medicine, provides a variety of professional services, including board approved online continuing education.
