Guest guest
Hi, I haven't posted before, so I hope I'm not doing something wrong. I have heard recently that the Japanese have determined what sound like fairly unpleasant interactions (what sounded like liver failure) between Chai Hu and Interferon. Has anybody heard about this? Guest guest
Since chai hu can raise natural interferon levels in the body, taken with a prescription of interferon can cause death by overdose. doug , " Par Scott " <parufus@e...> wrote: > Hi, I haven't posted before, so I hope I'm not doing something wrong. > > I have heard recently that the Japanese have determined what sound like fairly unpleasant interactions (what sounded like liver failure) between Chai Hu and Interferon. Guest guest
Yes, I have heard of this. I am a distributor for Jampanese Kampo herbs and we list Xiao Chai Hu Tang as being contraindicated for patients who are on interferon! I know the Kampo products I use, used in much scientific research. Currently there is a study going on at a hospital in New York using Liver Detox/Xiao Chai Hu tang, for Liver Patients. Gan cao is also suspect. So the whole rx should not be used with interferon, as Teresa noted, not just chai hu. It is possible that many herbs increase interferon. It is just that xiao chai hu tang is well studied for its use in hepatitis in japan. Because of this possibility, I think we may want to consider the use of interferon therapy to be an absolute contraindication to the use of any herbs until further study is done. the japanese studies involved powdered extracts at doses as low as 6-9 grams per day. so we can assume that moderate to high material doses are potentially dangerous. some of you may have had no problems using patents in such patients, but the risk may be too high for high dose powders or decoctions. I believe the complication that killed these patients was some kind of pneumonitis rather than liver failure; the info is on medline.
