Doug: Less serious becomes more complex? On the face of it, these arbitrary rules for numbers don't make sense to me. You can also say that serious diseases can have more patterns and branches and therefore require more herbs in a formula. Ultimately, Your insight into diagnosis and strategy for treatment determines how many herbs go into a formula; not some preconceived number. I suspect that TCM formulas are shorter simply because TCM always reduces any complicated problem to the same few 8-Principle/Zangfu patterns. The adage of 'one solution for many problems, many solutions for one problem' excuses and hides many shortcomings. Jim Ramholz
