Guest guest
I apologize for belaboring the whole dose issue regarding herb powder extracts, but I'm curious to know what different people are doing out there because I'm trying to figure out the best way to do this. I did a search of the archives but was unable to come up with a satisfactory answer to my question(s), so here goes. I'm sure everyone is familiar with the 6-10 gram per day protocol suggested by various granule companies. I'm quite clear about how to apply this method but would enjoy hearing people's experiences using this. I personally don't quite get the logic behind this method and am not terribly comfortable using it. What I'm more interested in, and what we (Huiyu and I) have sort of been doing, is what Todd has often talked about, and that is dosing like a loose herb formula- i.e., 5:1 extracts, divide the loose/raw herb dose by five and you've got the herb powder dose. This can lead to huge amounts of powder to be taken on a daily basis, which is expensive and really goes way over the amounts suggested by these herb companies, and so what I've been doing with fairly good results, is supposing that, in most cases, one bag of loose herbs can be boiled twice and taken for two days, and so I end up figuring the daily powder dose by dividing the loose/raw herb dose by ten instead of five (is everyone following me here?). Example. Here is a formula an old Chinese doctor friend of ours gave to a patient the other day. He only uses loose/raw herbs. How would you determine the dose for it? Dan Shen 9g Dang Shen 9g Xuan Shen 9g Tian Dong 9g Mai Dong 9g Chao Zao Ren 12g Bai Zi Ren 9g Yuan Zhi 6g Yan Hu Suo 6g Sheng Di 9g Shu Di 9g Long Gu 30g Mu Li 30g Xiao Mai 30g Da Zao 30g Sheng Gan Cao 9g Jie Geng 6g Dang Gui 9g Bai Shao 18g Wu Wei Zi 9g Now this is a rather large formula and was to be boiled twice and taken one bag for two days, and if I followed my method the patient would end up taking 26.7g of 5:1 extract per day (267g loose herb divided by 10= 26.7 grams of 5:1 extract per day). We would love to hear how different people would handle this particular situation, as well as other examples and methods. Thank you all so much for your help. Guest guest
Now this is a rather large formula and was to be boiled twice and taken one bag for two days, and if I followed my method the patient would end up taking 26.7g <<I have given upto 20g per day for severe cases. Never did more than that Alon
Guest guest
Alon, Thanks for your input, I appreciate it. I kind of guessed that Long Gu/Mu Li and other heavy, mineral/stone/bone,etc substances could be given in relatively smaller doses, but it's nice to hear someone else say this. I have occasionally given over 20g of powder per day to patients and have had no adverse reactions, on the contrary, seem to have obtained good results. Do you think it's a bad idea, or even unsafe, to give over 20g per day? Do you think it's a bad idea, or even unsafe, to give over 20g per day?>>>>No I do not has I have had about 30 or so patients in the last 10 years, that I have been using powders, taking these kind of doses for extended periods. Its a question of compliance as it tends to get thick. I think if taking very high dose decoction is safe the powders are the same, unless they are sprayed on something that is unsafe Alon
