I like Ted Kaptchuk's write up on > dosage for Constitutional, Spiritual, Mental and Physical effects in the Kan > literature. I have no personal issue with people using any dosage they want. and also do not dispute anyone's claims of success. I just want students and others to be aware that there is no basis in either the historical or scientific literature for the miniscule doses suggested by some parties. Such dosages may indeed work, but until I see research that comfirms this clinically or even pharmacologically, I will follow history and science as my guides. Ted also said that much of what we see in private practice is no doubt due to placebo. It is interesting what sticks with you when you hear a speaker. We all want to hear our biases confirmed by someone who supposedly knows the deal. As long as people and their patients know that they are treading in uncharted waters by prescribing minute doses of herbs for psychological complaints, there is no problem. But as Flaws has pointed out, the Chinese medical literature is actually replete with cases and studies using large doses of herbs for psych complaints and none he could find supporting the methodology you describe. Whoever said CM was made up by trial and error is partially correct. New ideas arose but were never accepted unless they conformed to core principles and then they must also stand the test of time and finally the test of research in modern china. I am willing to test new ideas when old ones fail me, otherwise why reinvent the wheel. But lets be honest about what is based in history and what is based in speculation. Its all about being informed.
