Guest guest
The fairly conservative medscape has given a ringing endorsement to eating a soy rich diet. After an exhaustive literature search and comparison of the mechanisms by which HRT causes various ill effects, the authors (one an MD at tuft's med school nutrition dept.) conclude fears of isoflavones in soy exerting any of the negative effects of HRT are completely unfounded. They conclude it to be safe and potentially helpful, but definitely harmless. Their dismissal of fears about soy is quite authoritative and long overdue. If you have been unsure what to advise your patients on this matter, check out this article. http://www.cyberounds.com/conferences/nutrition/ I overheard an acupuncturist tell her patient that soy may cause breast cancer, when in fact all evidence suggests it is protective. Poor training in western science causes one to make erroneous conclusions when reading the popular press. It has been clear for years to all serious researchers that soy is not only safe, but beneficial. By uncritically accepting that concerns expressed on TV news or the internet were valid, people began to pass them on to their patients. One of the things we must be able to do, in fact something we are trusted to do, is to be able to read the scientific literature and give professional level advice on subjects like this. when we advise patients, we are held to a much higher standard than a television reporter. this is an example of where a deficiency in one's education leads to a concrete clinical error with far reaching health implications.
