It would be interesting to know what the required reading list for TCM classes is at a chinese university. What exactly are we missing? From the list below, it would seem we now have good translations and other texts to cover the master's training in all areas (narrowly considering the use of internal medicine for complaints other than musculoskeletal). While this does not represent the limit of what one can learn about TCM, the question is whether it represents an adequate foundation and if not, what else do we need? part of this discussion has centered around the inadequacy of the english language literature for even master's level's studies in standard TCM. Arguably, the wider access one has to diverse sources, the more one will learn. On the other hand, there is certain core information everyone must learn in order to have basic competence. We must use standard texts to impart this information and it doesn't really matter what other texts say. I tell my students there are differing opinions on various things, but ultimately one has to settle on something. At the basic level,it is good to know there are options out there, but also to know what is general consensus. I think one of the values of modern TCM is that it is basically a summary of past experience, a general consensus. It is not the last word, but supposedly a pretty thorough summary. Even if we had another slew of commentaries on the classics and reams of case studies in english, I am not sure where in the master's program they would go. some schools do not even intend to teach the classics at the doctoral level, much less the master's. There is really no room for anything else at the master's level and everything currently there is arguably desirable. In addition, there are good arguments to be made for beefing up the masters in many areas including the classics, but none of it can fly. for those who think otherwise, send me a model curriculum and show me how it can be done in a 3200 hour program that meets CA standards for western sciences. All of this can only happen at the doctoral level. Someday this may be entry level in CA and then everyone will be satisfied. Guest guest
What exactly are we missing? I've just posted a reply to this on the ChineseMedicine.net list. It's rather lengthy, and as I understand the emphasis of the lists, it's more well suited for that forum than this one. I just wanted to let anyone who's on this list and not on that one know that my response can be found there. Ken
