Guest guest
Todd- I am not aware of studies confirming superior efficacy of ground hemp seed over decoction for constipation, but my use is based upon teachers, common sense and the analogous experience of flax and psyllium seeds. In a decoction made with ground hemp seeds, one may get the oils to lubricate, but no fiber. In the whole ground seed powder, one gets fiber as well as EFAs and both are known to help constipation. I usually suggest that clients grind it in a spice grinder and stir it in with cereal in the morning, adding sufficient liquid.. We can still get steamed seeds in New York- I don't know if this is still true in California. The dehulled Canadian hemp seed is widely available, but I have not tried it for constipation on the grounds that more fiber is in the whole seed. I can't say that the hemp seed hull alone has equivalent " slime benefits " to psyllium or flax seed hulls, simply because I've never experimented with husks alone. I'll try comparing the whole and husked seeds in vitro (unless I run across a bevy of constipated friends.)

I think your logic is sound and I never bother to use hempseed in decoction, though I still think it is the oil that the chinese were enamored of, not the fiber. here's why. the traditional chinese diet was very high in fiber, but somewhat low in fat (of course this is no longer the case). It seems less likely that chinese were constipated due to lack of bulk than modern americans. It is worth noting that ma zi ren WAN is a pill made from ground uncooked seeds, but I doubt the dose is high enough to provide any appreciable fiber. Let's see. Say one took a big classical pill that was 7-9 grams per pill. 10% is ma zi ren, which means even at this high pill dose, one does not get much fiber (probably less than .5 gram per dose, perhaps up to 2 grams per day). We can get steamed hempseed in CA, but the steaming alters the EFA's. Hempseed oil should not be subjected to any heat at all after extraction. It is always refrigerated. Even the low temp of steaming causes free radical production in hemposeed oil. Since these damaged EFA's may be carcinogenic, I do not feel comfortable with using heated hempseed. todd
