Dear List,

In an article published in " The American Journal Of The Medical

Sciences \ October2002 Vl324 " , titled 'Phytoestrogens:A viable

Option?' there is a discussion on dang gui from which i quote:

'Dang gui also contains a carcinogenic essential oil, and some

recommend that " all unnecessary exposure to dang gui should be

avoided " '.

A quick search at MedScape also reveals dang gui contains several

ingredients which are potentially carcinogenic.

The reference from both articles leads to the same source:

-Israel D, Youngskin EQ. Herbal therapies for perimenopausal and

menopausal complaints. Pharmacotherapy 1997;17:970-84.

Though Medscape has some more references.

Its the first time i stumble upon this information.

Any comments?

Dear Dan,

Thank you for raising this question. I too read that Dang Gui was toxic, in

the opinion of a gynecologist at University of San Francisco (I think) some

months ago, and I tried to contact that doctor, I can't remember her name

now, but was unable. Then I dropped it. What does Israel Youngskin say about

Dang Gui?

many essential oils are carcinogenic and neurotoxic when isolated,

concentrated and fed to rats in huge doses. this includes oils found in

common food products. this is a red herring and the use of the whole herb

has no evidence of carcinogenicity whatsoever.
