Guest guest
OK, here is what I would need to make the inclusion of learning characters for materia medica doable. I need character worksheets organized according to the 32 categories in bensky. At the top of the worksheet would be the category name in characters with pinyin underneath and wisemanese underneath that. then each character would have its stroke order diagrammed. Plus worksheets for the names of each of the herbs I teach. When I took chinese, we used tracing paper to do these assignments so you can copy right over the actual character at first. My sole additional goal in adding this material would be character recognition. The wiseman terms for all functions and treatment principles are already carefully and comprehensively defined in the lecture. I will not expect students to be able to draw characters nor pronounce them. The goal will be strictly to read medical chinese, not write or speak it. However, most will find that learning to draw characters is the best way to learn how to read them and of course, it is easier to remember an image with a name. Students will thus be required to do workbook assignments that should take less than 15 minutes per week. They will only be quizzed on character recognition, though, such as " the following characters are a. ren shen, b. ....., etc. " However, in order for this to be of lasting value, this information will have to be re-tested on year end exams.
