Guest guest
Craig Mitchell <cem As far as Chinese at SIOM goes, the students have a Chinese class every term from beginning to end. They go from very little knowledge of Chinese to being able to extract information from textbooks/journals/articles in Chinese. They don't actually use Chinese textbooks in class, however we try to connect the Chinese class to the internal medicine classes. So, this term they are doing gynecology in internal medicine and we are following that syllabus in Chinese class. So as they do menopause in the internal medicine class, we read about it in Chinese. I am exposing them to both modern journal articles, textbook style writing, and some semi-classical pieces, like Fu Qing-Zhu's gynecology. We emphasize extracting information over actually doing a translation per se. Our goal is to get them to the point where they can make use of the information in clinic. It is challenging, but lots of fun.
