I was just reading over the new issue of Acupuncture today and on p.38, there's a blurb about a 'Colorado Hospital Offers Acupuncture, TCM at Integrative Medical Center'. It goes on to say that they are actually dispensing herbs from their clinic. I would like to hear any experiences that people on the list have with these kinds of institutions. Since this is off topic - please e-mail me privately off the list.

Thanks,

Geoff

I never did receive much feedback on my original post - so I was

wondering if I might be able to re-spin my original post. I am

interested in any advice / experience people on the list here might have

had in approaching a hospital / network about establishing a TCM

practice within their organization. I'm sure there's tons of politics

etc, but any info would be great.

Hi Geoff and others,

Part of my work is in a multi-disiplenary, integrative medical setting. I have been there for 1.5 years and am really growing to love it! Although at times it can be very draining, primarily due to the nature of the clinic.

I started out as a independant contractor and found out there was some legalities about that, primarily it is illegal for M.D.s to bill for our services, unless we are an employee... now I am an employee. This sort of information was not taught at school and I have had learn as I go... taking Fred's Acupuncure Orthopedic class has helped allot with getting me up to speed, on the applicable laws and feel more comfortable communicating with the "Western Community".

I get paid per patient, and can basically do what I want in regards to treatment, and if I want to do things such as fit patients for othodics then it is up to me, to call and get authorization. Anymore, I fit almost all my patients, who present with back pain or sciatica, with these orthodic inserts (highly recommend Forward Arch, located in Carlsbad, Ca.) Most of the people I see have had 1 or more failed back surgeries and as a result get addicted to drugs like Oxycotin, Vicadon, Methadone etc.

Currently I have use of 2 rooms and see 2 patients, scheduled on the 1/2 hour <I schedule my patients, all of which are the Doctors; and also have a private practice, so it is great to create my own schedule!> . Most patients are on anywhere from 4 to 15 different medicines, so I do not prescribe to much herbs... there is no way I could possibly prescribe raw herbs to these patients and expect them to cook them... therefore, I started using Honso Granules, some Evergreen powders and also Health Concerns. It is o.k. with my boss to prescribe herbs, as I see fit. I mostly see muscle-skeletal presentations, however there are always very deep rooted patterns. The cases are so complex and the patients are generally only there for 2 weeks up to 2 months, there are some that stay for 1 year... that I will typically use 8 extra's to treat their root and then use Channel work to release the blockages. I do get results and I think it is because I get to see these patients from 3 to 5 times a week. However, I do not think the results are all my work! There are psychologists and H.H.P., in house processing groups, all day long and the Doc does some Trigger point injections and tapering off of narcotics... on everyone. Soooooooo I am sure that we get results, as a result of the patient being ready to move to the next level of their healing and also the fact that we are Multi-disciplenary.. the patients are occupied every moment of the day, sort of a retraining, considering allot of these people had been couch or bid ridden.

I know when Fred's class was out of St. Vincent's Hospital, we had the opportunity to check out the Alternative Medicine department. It was really nice, lots of treatment rooms and lots of powdered herbs. However, I do not think that the acupuncturists were paid very well.

If you have any specific questions, let me know.

Teresa

Hi Teresa,

I'd love to compare notes with you off-list. I've been working for the past 3 years at an integrative residential treatment center for women with eating disorders. I've also experienced the problem of not getting enough feedback about my work because they receive so many different modalities. My e-mail address is chemenway
