Jason: It was the first indication in Him-che Yeung's book. His list of ways to prepare Chai hu was the similar to the Chinese literature. I would rephrase it to say that Chai hu used for external conditions works best when used raw. In the past when making raw herb formulas, I've use raw Chai hu for cold and flu formulas, as well as others. But while watching Chinese pharacists prepare some herbs before adding them to a formula, I don't remember anyone ever preparing Chai hu---much less with tortoise blood to benefit yin. I get the impression (please correct me if I'm wrong) that, in daily practice, no one on the forum ever prepares raw herbs individually before adding them to a formula.
