Guest guest
Group, I took some superb on-line courses on the Qi Mechanism and the Shang Han Lun from Chinese Herbal Medicine several years ago but have not kept up with the group since. I think what has done is wonderful. My name is Joseph Garner, L.Ac., Dipl. Ac., Dipl. C.H. I got my training at George Kitschie's Colorado School of TCM in Denver and graduated in December 1995, private practice beginning in spring of 1996. In late summer of 1997 I moved to the Phoenix area (long story why) and now practice in a group office in Tempe with Janice Benjamin, RN, L.Ac. and Qun Li, MD (China), L.Ac. We all used to be faculty members at Phoenix Institute of Herbal Medicine & Acupuncture, which recently moved from Scottsdale to central Phoenix, but I am the only one of us still working there. Right now I am not teaching any courses but am only supervising one student clinic shift a week. I have taught courses on point location, mid-level diagnostic theory (using Bob Flaws' Handbook/formerly Compendium as a textbook) first-year herbal medicine and introductory courses in acupuncture meridian therapy. I used to be an assistant clinic supervisor at Colorado School of TCM and worked with Jim Ramholtz a time or two and also took one of his pulse courses. I have tried to integrate Bob Flaws' teachings on Li Dong Yuan's Yin Fire theory into my practice and to create in myself a more advanced understanding of the complicated scenarios our modern patients present. These days I am assiduously studying Leon Hammer's pulse book and hope to begin his pulse training courses with one of his introductory level teachers in April. I hope to learn as much as possible about pulse diagnosis in my life, maybe even as much as Jim Ramholtz knows someday, if I'm lucky. I am also trying to turn myself into a rheumatology specialist by more or less memorizing the Rheumatology book by Chieu and Guillaume. My main talent lies in treating pain, and I practice an eclectic blend of acupuncture based on my studies of Mark Seem, Joseph Helms, Yoshio Manaka, Richard Tan, Yitian Ni, Stephen Biirch, Kiiko Matsumoto, Miki Shima and others, as well as TCM. Lastly, as far as herbs go, I am mostly using Honso's products these days as well as a few other patents and raw herbs on occasion. My colleague Qun Li introduced the Honso Kampo products to me and I have loved them. She happens to be the wife of Dan Wen, who is President of Honso USA Inc. and who has contributed of late to your group. He and I are working on a series of interview-style advertising articles to accompany large ads in Acupuncture Today. The first one just went off to Acupuncture Today and is based on his most recent posting to your group, discussing QA/QC and such in Japanese granulated herbal products. I am also trying to gradually integrate Miki Shima's teachings on herbal hara diagnosis and treatment into my knowledge base. So mentally I have a full plate. Sorry to go on so long, but I think I have pretty much covered all the important bases. I look forward to interacting with you all.
