As active researchers in the area of exercise physiology, sport

nutrition, strength and conditioning, and sports medicine, we would

like to make the following comment and observations regarding the

current controversy about the supposed link of ephedra

supplementation to the tragic death of Baltimore Orioles pitcher

Steve Bechler due to multiple organ failure, as a result of heat

stroke, on Feb.17, 2003.

Jim,

I really appreciate your posting this and the previous link. It

really helps provide us with arguments against the misinformation that

patients may bring.

Excellent posting, Jim. This is the first professional response I've seen from the scientific community on this recent episode involving ephedra. Given the nearly 100,000 deaths per year in America from prescription drug errors under the direct care of an M. D., the comparatively tiny number of deaths from self care or from alt. med. profession indicates the media is not doing a great job of representing this issue appropriately. It's good to note that the professional scientific response indicates that the pseudoephedrine supplement "was probably the least of the contributing factors leading to his death".

Thanks for posting this!
