Guest guest
March, 9, 2003 Dear Listmembers I would like to quote the introductory pharagraph from the first chapter " The General Principles of Formula Creation " from the Qing Dynasty (1761) medical classic Creating a Formula which Fits The Use Cheng Fang Qie Yong authored by Wu Yi Luo. I think it has some bearing upon our current discussions on the Qi and herbal formula construction. The book compiles and discusses in detail the composition and ratonale for combination of over 1180 Chinese herbal formulae. The pharagraph begins with a quote from Chapter 75 " Acupuncture Methods: True and Evil Qi " of the The Spiritual Pivot Ling Shu volume of the Nei Jing : " The True Qi is received from Heaven. With the Grain Qi it fills the body. " " The True Qi zhen Qi , that is the Origin Qi yuan Qi . Endowed with the Yin and Yang and Five elements the person/humanity generates this Qi. Subsequently, it creates the body form. We receive it from Heaven. It is the True Qi that is endowed from Heaven. It is the Qi generated in combination with the post-heavenly water and grain. Together they fill the whole body. Subsequently it circulates incessantly. Hence on the upper regions of the body there is the Shan Zhong Qi. Thus we can breath. In this way the entire Qi is gathered and nurtured. Hence the circulation of the Qi in the whole body is regulated. It then circulates in the lungs. At the center there is the Water and grain Qi. It manages the centre and and then gets circulated towards the four directions. The pure ascends upwards while the turbid descends. Drinks and food are decomposed and processed. This will nurture the Nutritional abd Guardian (Qi). It then moves to the spleen and stomach. Below is the Cinnabar Field dan tian Qi. It pulls the Qi from the chest to descend and return to the kan palace. The quintessential jing and the Qi both comes from the same root. Both originates from the Triple Energizer san jiao . They are both received and stored in the kidneys . Once the Qi gathers ju , there is life. When it disperses, there is death. If the physician wishes to preserve human life ,s/he must be aware of this point. This is the first principle .
