Guest guest
Cara: I uploaded a file with herbs contraindicated and cautioned for pregnancy. (Bensky text) One of my students put this together last year. I haven't checked it for 100% accuracy but I'm sure it's close. Bolded herbs are CI'd. Others are cautioned. Look for CI'd herbs in file section. Guest guest
To Whom Anyone who is interested in Japanese Kampo: Herbs to avoid durning pregnancy: Japanese Ministry of Health, Welfare and Labor cautions us to prescribe following herbs to pregnant and nursing women: 1) Mudanpi (Moutan) can cause abortion. 2) Fuzi (Acorniti) can cause abortion. 3) Taoren (Persicae) can cause abortion and miscarriage. 4) Niuxi (Achyranthis) can cause abortion. 5) Dahuang (Rhizoma Rhei) can constrict uterus. 6) Dahuang contains an anthraquinone derivative, that causes diarrhea for babies. 7) Mangxiao (Malibilitum) can contract uterus. Needless to point out that excessive amount of Gancao (licorice) can cause anemia and myopathy, so we have to carefully assess total amount of Gancao. Acupuncturist Shinjiro Shinjiro Kanazawa, L.Ac. Guest guest
Dear Shinjiro Kanazawa: Can you provide some published or internet sources in English regarding licorice as a cause of myopathy? How much licorice are we talking about? I have a patient who has high levels of creatinine kinase (CK) which have not been satisfactorily explained, and who does consumes licorice daily. I'd be much obliged for some references on the relationship of licorice to myopathy. Many thanks, Prof. Neal White - Shinjiro Kanazawa Friday, March 21, 2003 7:31 PM Herbs to avoid durning pregnancy To Whom Anyone who is interested in Japanese Kampo:Herbs to avoid durning pregnancy:Japanese Ministry of Health, Welfare and Labor cautions us to prescribefollowing herbs to pregnant and nursing women:1) Mudanpi (Moutan) can cause abortion.2) Fuzi (Acorniti) can cause abortion.3) Taoren (Persicae) can cause abortion and miscarriage.4) Niuxi (Achyranthis) can cause abortion.5) Dahuang (Rhizoma Rhei) can constrict uterus.6) Dahuang contains an anthraquinone derivative, that causes diarrhea forbabies.7) Mangxiao (Malibilitum) can contract uterus.Needless to point out that excessive amount of Gancao (licorice) can causeanemia and myopathy, so we have to carefully assess total amount of Gancao.Acupuncturist ShinjiroShinjiro Kanazawa, L.Ac.Chinese Herbal Medicine, a voluntary organization of licensed healthcare practitioners, matriculated students and postgraduate academics specializing in Chinese Herbal Medicine, provides a variety of professional services, including board approved online continuing education.
