Guest guest
Dr. Proph. White: " Dear Shinjiro Kanazawa: Thanks for your reply and the references. Do I understand correctly that Japanese pharmacology considers continuing to take up to 2.5 grams daily of licorice is acceptable for patients already suffering from hypokalemia, myopathy, etc.? Also, do you know what form the 2.5 grams of gan cao is in? For instance, is it 2.5 grams of the dried licorice root, or 2.5 grams of a standardized extract of some sort? Many thanks, Neal. " A. for First question: Yes, it is O.K. till 2.5g per day. A. for Second question: 2.5g as weight of a raw ingredient. Standard Japanese Kampo formulas usually contain 1 to 2.5g (rarely 3g) of gan cao as a daily dosage. As you know, 70% of Chinese formulas contain gan cao. If the patient takes two formulas, then total amount of gan cao can exceed 2.5g. Needless to say, this is Japanese standard. The standard dosage in Chinese text books is much larger, even it is the same formula. I do not know one gram of " glanuled gan cao " is equivalent of how many grams of raw gan cao. Mr. Todd Lugar might know... Acupuncturist Shinjiro Shinjiro Kanazawa, L.Ac.
