IMO, this discussion should never be about what individuals, particularly those already trained and licensed, choose as their path of learning and practice, and I believe you completely when you say that your time is better spent in other ways. My contention is that this discussion should only be about what we require in the training programs for new students, for the future. I believe that our master's programs should have a non-elective translation component of about 12 semester units, spread over three years. This would be a comfortable pace and could integrate well with current other material being taught. It would provide a cohort of graduates ready for a doctoral level programs, and I believe would enhance the level of non-Chinese practitioners in the future.
