All,

The following information is available from the CDC website:

SARS is diagnosed by:

1) A measured temperature of > 100.5 degrees F or 38 degrees C

2) One or more clinical findings of respiratory illness, e.g., cough, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, hypoxia, or radiographic findings of either pneumonia or acute respiratory distress syndrome

AND

Travel within 10 days of symptom onset to documented area of or area of suspected community transmission of SARS

OR

Close contact within 10 days of symptom onset with SARS case or suspected SARS case.

Another area within the website said the following about the disease:

Influenza-like symptoms including fevers, myalgias, headache, sore throat, dry cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, in some cases followed by hypoxia, pneumonia and occasionally acute respiratory distress requiring mechanical ventilation and death. Laboratory findings may include thrombocytopenia and leukopenia.

Does anyone have more details on how SARS manifests.

All I know at this point is high fever and cough. I

have had fun trying to come up with ideas with friends

but with out some more details it is hard.

I was talking to one Chinese instructor here about this the other

day; he'd apparently talked to someone in China who told him that Ban

Lan Gen, etc were suddenly very expensive and difficult to get.

I'm afraid I can't provide any clinical information.

Unfortunately, the public health response here has

been to clamp down on as much information as possible

to try and control what appears to be a potential

crisis of considerable proportions.

There are certainly cases that have been reported

here, but only recently have those reports surfaced

in public. I have not talked to any medical folks

who have actually treated anyone with that diagnosis.

I do have my antennae out and will let you know

if I hear anything.

Ken, here's a good CDC update from the WM view using Marjorie's info. http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/sars/clinicians.htm This gives the SARS clinical update. Nothing on CM, of course.
