Dear Listmembers,

Sorry Jim for inadvertantly leaving out the answer to a part of your querry about SHL which I assume refer to Shang Han Lun. Unfortunately, the author of the account on SARs in the Southern Daily is not a TCM researcher . Hence, the epidemic was not being looked at from the TCM professional perspective i.e. 'CM theory' was not applied.

Looking at the various clinical accounts (from various on-line Chinese and English language newspapers in the past number of weeks ) of the manifestations of SARS in Hongkong, Southern China, Taiwan , Singapore Canada and there in the US, I think that there is definitely sufficient epidemiological information to plot out this epidemic in terms of the the theory of Wen Bing as we understand it today. After collecting all these epidemiological and clinical data, hypothetically, appropriate formulae and methodologies may be assembled and put in place to prepare for an assault to this epidemic. Here in Australia, we are expecting winter any time now. Hence, preparations are underway to deal with an expected flu epidemic.

The first step theoretically in this endeavour is to translate the causality of SARS (corona virus) into the Wen Bing theory causality ie. brought about by a perverse Qi Li Qi , epidemic Qi Yi Qi or pestilential Qi Li Qi or composite Qi Za Qi . Subsequently, the laboratory causality of SARS has to be translated into its clinical and epidemiological parameters. And at this stage, the clinical pattern or zhenghou of the disease is vital. In the course of executing this two-tiered translation process, we are in the throes of creating a new paradigmatic apporoach in dealing with infectious diseases.

Rory:

Do you have enough information to plot it out in Wen Bing? I am

interested in seeing how CM theories apply---perhaps they are just

treating it symptomatically.
