April 8.2003

Dear Listmembers,

I just got a copy of a statement(on-line Aprill 4,2003) made by Mr. Li Li Ming who is the head of the China Disease Control and Prevention Center who stated that the possible etiology of SARS ( the statement refers to it as 'Atypical pneumonia' fei dian xing feiyan) is the microorganism chlamydia. This finding was the result of " morphololicial studies " . That from the five cadaver specimens they found 'chlamydia-like granules' yi yuan ti ke li were found. The cadaver specimens came from " different regions and hospitals " in China.

During the media conference, Mr. Li also revealed that on February 28th, the head of the center's viirology Prevention and Control laboratory Mr . Hong Tao " through the medium of the elecromicroscope for the first time discovered the chlamydia granules. Subsequently, pathological/morphological, immunological ,virological and molecular biological studies were carried out . "

According to the statement, experts in China are ruling out mycoplasma, adenovirus, respiratory syncitia virus, flu virus, measles virus, pneumonia chlamydia, parrot fever as the pathogen responsible for SARS.

The statment also said that through histological immunological chemisty, they found that the pathogen was in the cytoplasm of the cadaver specimen. Laboratory test confirmed that " the etiology of SARS is the cellular reactive pathogen of the chlamydia and RNA virus " yi yuan ti RNA bing du deng xi bao jiang fan ying xing bing yuan ti.

Anti body tests were also conducted on serum from 31 people i(suffering from SARS) in Guangzhou city and were compared with the serum from patients suffering from acute fever (non-specific) . They found out that the cellularly cultured pathogen was similar with those isolated from the cadaver specimen.

Serological tests of 6 patients suffering from SARS in Guangdong province also revealed that on the acute phase of the disease, the level of serum heat resistant endotoxin rose. This was compared with the level of serum heat resistant endotoxin of patients suffering from ordinary fever in Beijing which showed a negative result.

Rey,

I did an interview program with Dr. Hong Tao

over the weekend in which he presented his

micro-photographs of the chlamydia findings

and discussed the process by which they

were produced. He expressed the opinion

that the etiology of the disease may be

related to some combination of pathogenic

agents and factors. He also mentioned that

the findings are being prepared for publication

in The Lancet and should be available soon.
